Best Hotels in Amish Country, Ohio

Carlisle Inn (Sugarcreek)
- Price Range: $$
- Best For: Families, couples
I have the most experience with the Carlisle Inn since I have stayed there and my wife worked there part time. The inn has 69 rooms that have modern amenities with Amish craftsmanship. The inn is unique from the others on this list since it is located on a 55 acre campus which has Dutch Valley Restaurant and Bakery, Ohio Star Theater, Dutch Valley Gifts, and Dutch Valley Market. Make sure to get a cream stick at the bakery. You won’t be disappointed.

Carlisle Inn (Walnut Creek)
- Price Range: $$
- Best For: Families, couples
I have stayed and been to numerous events at the Carlisle Inn Walnut Creek. It is a more traditional and laid back hotel versus the Sugarcreek location. There are 52 rooms that feature Amish craftsmanship. To me the standout feature of this hotel is the spectacular views of the farming valleys. Rooms have balconies with rocking chairs to take in the scenery. Personally, I’m more partial to the valley view in the rear of the hotel. When you book, request a room on that side and you won’t regret it.

This quaint 33 room inn is owned and operated by a Mennonite family and is known for its exceptionally clean rooms with furniture crafted by local Amish artisans. I live a mile away from the hotel and I have never stayed there, the reputation speaks for itself. When we visited Acadia National Park the operator of the horse carriage rides inside the park told us he buys his horses in this area and always stays at the Dutch Host Inn. When someone travels from Maine to stay there, that tells you everything you need to know.

What to Look for When Choosing a Property in Amish Country
Think about where you want to stay. If shopping and eating at restaurants in Berlin and Walnut Creek is important, you’ll want to look for lodging in those areas because it will make your days simpler. If peace and quiet is what you are after, then staying in a cabin or B&B outside of town should be your focus.
Before you book your stay, here are some key questions to ask any property.
- Is breakfast included and what does it typically consist of?
- What is the cancellation policy?
- Are there special packages available for anniversaries, honeymoons, or holidays?
- Is there a minimum stay requirement on weekends or holidays?
- Are pets allowed on the property?
- Is the property accessible for guests with mobility concerns?
- Is there parking on site and is it free?
- Are there any extra fees not included in the nightly rate?
How to Use Credit Card Points to Stay in Amish Country
A great way to save money when you travel is by using credit card points. My wife and I have saved thousands of dollars over the last few years on our hotel stays. The savings can be significant, especially during peak fall season when rates climb. There are a number of national chain hotels in Amish Country where you can use credit card points to cover your stay.
Amish Country has properties affiliated with three major hotel loyalty programs.
- IHG One Rewards
- Choice Privileges
- Wyndham Rewards
You’ll want to check to see if you can book your stay with points, if you have points with any one of these programs.
If you are not sure which hotel card is right for you, my guide to choosing the best hotel credit card walks you through the whole process.

Getting the Most Out of Your Stay in Amish Country, Ohio
Best Restaurants in Amish Country
One of the reasons that people come to Ohio’s Amish Country is to enjoy the food. There are a lot of excellent restaurants in the area. I have put together a list of the 10 best restaurants that you can enjoy when you come to Amish Country. From traditional Amish buffets to local landmark diners, there is something on the list for every appetite.
Things to Do in Amish Country
Another major reason that people come to Amish Country is the variety of things that you can see and do. I have put together two different posts that can help you find something to enjoy while you are in the area.
It doesn’t matter if you are watching your budget or looking to fill every hour of your trip, between the two posts you will have more than enough to keep you busy.
Planning Your Amish Country Trip: Common Questions Answered
Berlin is about 106 miles from Columbus, which works out to just over 2 hours by car. From Cleveland you are looking at about 74 miles and roughly an hour and a half. Pittsburgh is the furthest of the three at around 107 miles, putting you at about 2 hours and 15 minutes depending on your route. All three cities make Amish Country very doable as either a day trip or an overnight getaway.
This is one of the most important things to know before you visit. Most businesses, shops, restaurants, and markets are closed on Sundays, so if you are planning your big shopping day or counting on eating at a specific Amish restaurant, do not save it for Sunday.
That said, Sunday is actually a wonderful day to drive the back roads and take in the scenery. Plus, traffic isn’t an issue on Sundays. Some of the chain restaurants and larger properties stay open. Think of Sunday as your slow down and scenic drive day and you will not be disappointed.
Honestly you could spend a long weekend and still not see everything. Two nights and three days is a sweet spot for most visitors. That gives you enough time to explore the main towns, hit a few restaurants, do some shopping, and actually slow down and soak in the experience. If you are a shopper or a foodie you could easily fill four or five days. I have lived here my whole life and I am still finding new things to enjoy.
Absolutely. Kids love it here and honestly it is one of the best places you can take them. Where else can they watch a horse and buggy roll past while they are eating a fresh donut? The Berlin Resort with its miniature village, movie theater, and expansive grounds is a natural fit for families. Add in farm stays, cheese factories you can tour, and wide open countryside and you have plenty to keep kids engaged without a single screen involved.
There are some pet friendly options but it is not universal, so always call ahead before you book. The Dutch Host Inn for example does not accept pets, and several of the B&Bs have the same policy. Your best bet for traveling with a pet is to look at vacation rental cabins where pet policies tend to be more flexible. Hillside Hideaways and some of the private cabin rentals in the area are worth checking for pet friendly availability.
Yes, several do. The Berlin Grande Hotel has a heated saltwater pool, the Berlin Resort has a heated saltwater pool, and the Carlisle Inn in Sugarcreek has a heated pool. The Carlisle Inn at Walnut Creek doesn’t have a pool but you can use the pool at the Sugarcreek location. If a pool is important to your stay it is worth confirming directly with the property since hours and availability can vary by season.
Final Thoughts
It doesn’t matter if you are coming to Amish Country, Ohio as a solo traveler, with your family, as a couple, or with friends. There is no shortage of great places to stay no matter your budget or travel style. You have traditional hotels and inns, bed and breakfasts, cabins, treehouses, and vacation rentals.
You can find places in the heart of towns that allow you to walk to restaurants and shops. While other lodging options allow you to be away from the hustle and bustle so that you can unwind and relax.
I may be a little biased since I grew up here, but I truly believe Amish Country is one of the most underrated destinations in the Midwest. Once you visit, I think you will agree.
